Why Wear Rockports?

Rockport - Two Oceans Marathon – 23 April

Runner: John Renwick

A perfectly clear yet somewhat fresh morning greeted us at the start of this years’ Two Oceans Marathon as, for the second year running, I was taking on this 56km challenge in the same pair of Rockport DresSports.

Having already run in these DresSports last year there wasJohn-Resnick somewhat of a different feeling standing there at the start line this year. I had a lot more confidence in what to expect, as I thought to myself, these shoes made it over the distance last year I’m sure they can find their way around the course again this year.
There was a bit of pressure though, and with it some nervous energy too, to live up to expectations of last years’ run where everything did go very well. Added to that was all the hype created by the Expo where we talked the talk to everyone about the DresSports, how comfortable they are and their capabilities in running 56km! Come the morning of the race this was now time to walk the walk, to put the brand’s name and reputation on the line, which we’d spent three days at the Expo talking up. All the talk meant nothing now. It was time to put it to the test again...

Overall the race was amazing. From the weather, route, support and, not least of all, the DresSports!
I thought I wouldn't say this again after last years’ race when I said “The shoes exceeded expectations” but I have to honest and say that, again, I’m impressed!
In aspects like cushioning, flex and weight (weighing only 80g) the dress shoes performed as well as any racing shoe would over that distance and, if anything, these DresSports felt more comfortable than they did last year. Of course, this is the shoes second time round at this distance so you would certainly expect them to be a little more worn in. That feat in itself is also rather impressive, 112km down after running the event twice and I’m wearing them to work today! No one the wiser that my shoes have been through all that unless I tell them!

Officially there is no “dress shoe” category of running shoes out there which is why most people thought we were mad running in them. This was confirmed by the many comments from fellow runners, spectators and some commentators along the route. One runner even said “how much are they paying you to do this?” implying it must be torture running in dress shoes.
Another comment at the Expo was “Running in a pair of dress shoes can’t be comfortable!”
These chirps and even the looks on some people’s faces when we ran past them said it all...crazy!

Not only was it done but the manner in which it was done too, two years running, speaks volumes for the shoe and its comfort. There was always that question out there after last years’ race that maybe “all just went well on the day”, it’s a “one hit wonder” but that certainly is not the case.
If I was a bit sceptical last year, Two 56km races down, both completed in the same time of 4:34, and both without any problems like blisters, etc and that scepticism has now been replaced with total confidence and respect for this brand who is brave enough to put its product to the test.
I quite happily shout from the roof tops now how impressed I am with this shoe is!

I have to admit I was a little nervous when I first signed up
to wear the shoes for the full 56km Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon ,but after putting the shoes on for the first time.
I was truly amazed at the comfort, flexibility and the weight.
I was very impressed with the shoe and the constant reminder from other athletes and spectators that I was in fact running in my Kerk skoene ,made for a very enjoyable day out .Just to put it into perspective ,I last ran Two oceans 13 years ago in traditional running shoes and ran half an hour slower .
I think the next mission will be to see if I can run my
PB 10km in the Rockport’s ,because those shoes are fast !!
